Scientific name: Hamelia axillaris

Description and characteristics: This is very similar to the Hamelia patens (Firebush) plants in the garden. The plant parts that distinguish this from Firebush are its grayish branches, oval, pointed leaves (dark green above and pale green below). The berries are oblong, 5-6 mm long, green turning red then black atmaturity, fleshy. Distinguished from other shrubs in the family by the funnelform, yellow flowers and many-seeded berries.
